"1923 – Petit Jean State..."

  • 1923 – Petit Jean State Park Created
  • 1927 - Act 172 created the Arkansas State Parks Commission
  • 1933 - CCC and NPS began work on first parks
  • 1936 - 1st State Park, Petit Jean, dedicated
  • 1937 - Ark. Publicity Advisory Commission created, and funding for employees established
  • 1945 – Arkansas Resources and Development Commission (included the Divisions of Forestry and Parks, and Publicity
  • 1953 – State Forestry and Parks Commission created
  • 1955 - State Publicity and Parks Commission combined the two previous commissions to absorb the responsibilities
  • 1969 - Name changed to State Parks, Recreation and Travel Commission, which remains today
  • 1971 - Act 38 - Gave considerable emphasis to travel & recreation
    • Created the Ark. Dept. of Parks & Tourism (cabinet level)
    • Expanded the department’s efforts ;Director is appointed
    • by the Governor

"To promote local park development"
      • To promote local park development, Parks offers 50/50 Matching Grants up to $250,000 to cities & counties, $45,000 Fun Parks Grants for communities with 2,500 people or less, and Trails for Life Grants up to $35,000 for a standard health and fitness trail and up to $70,000 for a custom health and fitness trail related project (such as a connecting trail between two existing trails that provide a health and fitness component.)
      • Wildlife Observation Trail Pilot Grant Program – to provide grants up to $100,000 per applicant to construct, enhance, extend or renovate trails and support facilities that provide enhanced opportunities for the enjoyment and observation of Arkansas’s wildlife by the general public.  Cities, counties, non-profit organizations and state agencies are eligible.

  •       The Arkansas History Commission (AHC) is one of the oldest existing state agencies in The Natural State. Arkansas's official state archive was created by the General Assembly in 1905. A division of the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism, our mission is to:


  • keep and care for the official archives of the State of Arkansas;
  • collect material bearing on the history of Arkansas from the earliest times;
  • copy and edit official records and other historical material; and
  • encourage historical work and research.
